Jackson Hole’s wildlife certainly adds to the beauty that the area is known for, but knowing what to look for and where to look is key to seeing wildlife in Jackson Hole. Read here for our guide to viewing wildlife in Jackson Hole and what you can expect to see during your vacation.

Types of wildlife in Jackson Hole

When wildlife viewing in Jackson Hole, visitors can expect to see a wide variety most anywhere they explore. A few iconic animals to keep your eye out for include, bison, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, grizzly bears, black bears, gray wolves, bald eagles, and so much more.

Where and when to see wildlife

While animals, like bison, are frequent visitors of Jackson Hole and Yellowstone National Park, knowing where and when to spot the local wildlife is key to seeing our local residents.

Time of year

While almost any time of year you are likely to encounter wildlife, early spring is a great time to spot wildlife, due to fewer crowds. As the summer begins and more people flood Jackson Hole and surrounding areas, animals tend to retreat further into the mountains. Even winter proves to be a great time for wildlife viewing due to most animals retiring to lower ground for winter. In fall, the migration of the elk herds begins as they make their way down to the National Elk Refuge and are well visible into the winter.

In terms of the time of day, generally, early mornings or early evenings are the best times for wildlife viewing in Jackson Hole.

Where to see wildlife

Within Grand Teton National Park Oxbow Bend is by far one of the most popular spots for wildlife viewing. Two other noteworthy spots include Antelope Flats Road and Moose-Wilson Road. Bison frequent the National Elk Refuge in the winter and can be found throughout both parks.

Tips for viewing wildlife

When viewing any wildlife in their natural habitat it is always best to keep a safe distance and do with extreme caution. While it might seem harmless to approach without touching, disturbing the wildlife is dangerous for them and for you. Keep a quiet demeanor if you are approached by wildlife and do not ever feed the wildlife to lure them closer or whatever the intention might be. Feeding wildlife is not only harmful to them but could not end well for you either.

Animals like bison or elk that are seemingly docile should also not be approached. When startled, they are most likely to charge and can cause injury or death.

If venturing out for a day of hiking or biking come prepared with things like bear spray or a bear bell. These items will help in keeping a safe distance should you encounter a bear in the wilderness.

Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris

One of the best and safest ways to view wildlife in Jackson Hole is by booking a Jackson Hole Wildlife Safari. These guided tours bring you within a safe distance to see the wildlife that roams Grand Teton National Park and the National Wildlife Refuge. Possible wildlife you will encounter include elk, moose, bison, and bald eagles.
