Once you are there

Upon entering the park, you’ll drive 20 miles before reaching the West Thumb Geyser Basin. Here, visitors are able to get out and explore some of the park’s most notable geothermal features. On the way, you will find Lewis Lake and Lewis Lake Falls, which makes for a nice stop to help break up the drive. If you are interested in seeing Old Faithful, drive west from West Thumb for about 30 minutes.

What to see on the way

Tackle two National Parks in one day and stop at the Grand Teton National Park along your drive on the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Highway, from Jackson Hole to Yellowstone. With its majestic peaks, pristine alpine lakes, and rugged canyons, this park is one not to be missed during your stay in Jackson Hole. One of the best times to visit Grand Teton National Park is in the fall, with its spectacle of colors and snow-capped peaks, you won’t want to be anywhere else.

When to visit

The most popular time to visit Yellowstone is during the summer months of June, July, and August. To avoid crowds and enjoy milder temperatures, visit during the spring or the fall. Do note that the south entrance is not open year-round and is only available for motor vehicles from the beginning of May to the beginning of November.
