Spring Activities in Jackson Hole

As spring begins, ski resorts start to wind down, while most visitors try to eek out every last minute on the slopes. Typically considered “shoulder” season, springtime in Jackson Hole can bring about unpredictable weather and muddy trails, but there is still plenty to experience in the beautiful outdoors. While many of the spring activities in Jackson Hole are also enjoyed at other times of the year, this might be the best time of year to enjoy them.

Fly fishing

Jackson Hole is a playground of outdoor activities, including fishing. For a moment of solitude or the perfect father-son outing, fishing in Jackson Hole is a favorite pastime for locals and visitors alike. The Snake River and the area’s national parks offer some of the best places to fish in Jackson Hole. River fishing is prime around March and April. This time of year, you are mostly fishing from shore or wading.

Road biking

It may not quite be mountain biking season or snowy enough for fat tire bikes, but road biking affords a great opportunity to get outdoors on drier land. Road biking in Jackson Hole allows you to cover more ground and take in the beautiful scenery along the way.

With 67 miles of pathways, Jackson Hole offers plenty of route options for the leisurely and experienced pedal pushers. There are many options for biking close to town including the Moose-Wilson Pathway. The paved route begins in Wilson and runs to Teton Village. In the summer bikers can choose to continue to Moose to the entrance at Grand Teton National Park. From Wilson to Moose is 16.2 miles.

Opening of the National Parks

While the National Parks, both Yellowstone and Grand Teton are open year-round, they do close to vehicle traffic in winter. Park roads in Grand Teton start to open around May 1st, dependent on weather conditions. Yellowstone’s roads are closed from early November to mid-April. The southern entrance will open as the roads begin to.

Plus, when you visit the parks in the spring, you avoid the summer crowds that fill the roads and the trails. And while many of the trails will be covered in snow still or a bit muddy from snowmelt, scenic drives and overlooks are quite enjoyable without the people.
