Everything You Need to Know About the Opening of Teton Park Road

Highway traversing the Grand Teton national park with a view over lush green forests and the Grand Teton Range, Wyoming, USA.

While Grand Teton National Park is open year-round, some areas are inaccessible by car from approximately November through May due to seasonal winter closures, including the Teton Park Road. Now that it is spring, crews have been clearing snow and preparing for the opening of Teton Park Road. Here’s everything you need to know!

Teton Park Road

The Teton Park Road runs through the heart of the park. Running 20 miles long, from the town of Moose to Jackson Lake Junction. It follows the base of the Teton mountain range, making it one of the most beautiful drives in the country. There are many scenic pullouts along the way to stop, take in the views, and spot local wildlife. While driving on the road is enjoyable, many people use the road to recreate during the winter and spring off-season.

Opening/closing

The road is entirely paved and suitable for all drivers. Because the road is not plowed in winter, it is closed from November 1 to April 30, from the Taggart Lake Trailhead to the Signal Mountain Lodge. For the winter adventurers, the road is groomed for skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking from mid-December to mid-March. It is also popular with bikers in late fall, as it is open for biking from November 1 until it is covered in snow. In the spring, as the snow melts, bikers (or hikers, joggers, etc.) can ride on the road until April 30.

Opening of Teton Park Road

It was announced today that the spring plowing will begin in Grand Teton National Park on Monday, March 14. The plowing operations always mark the end of over-snow access along the stretch of the Teton Park Road for the season. Once plowing operations begin, visitors cannot access the road until the work is complete.

The National Park Service anticipates the road will be open to cycling, speed walkers, roller skating, skateboarding, jogging, and leashed pet walking on April 1. Once the park opens, it is a great time to explore, usually with fewer visitors. You can see the park with snow-covered grounds and peaks, yet still wear shorts and summer gear.

Teton Park Road opens to motor vehicles on May 1. At this time, everyone is permitted to access the road throughout the park.
