Where to See Bison in Jackson Hole

As a symbol of the American West, bison are also a prominent icon in Jackson Hole. The Jackson bison herd is one of the last remaining of the wild herd that once roamed North America. They are what help keep Jackson WILD. Experience the best of the west and discover where to see Bison in Jackson Hole.

History of the Jackson bison herd

Historically, bison freely roamed the Jackson area, which was made evident by findings of prehistoric bison remains. To re-introduce them into the area, 20 bison from Yellowstone National Park were re-introduced to a 1,500-acre Jackson Hole Wildlife Park near Moran, WY. They were maintained here for roughly 20 years. The bison then escaped the park, and it was decided to let them roam freely.

Grand Teton National Park

Originally plains animals, bison are typically found in flat, prairie-like areas where they can easily roam and graze. In the summer, bison mainly use non-forested areas of grassland and sage-steppe inside Grand Teton National Park.

Inside the park, Oxbow Bend is by far one of the most popular spots for wildlife viewing. Kelly Loop and Antelope Flats are other great places to spot bison. This prairie and plains section of the park is filled with sagebrush, historic buildings and bison, plus a chance to see pronghorns as well.

The Elk Ranch Flats turnout is another place to see bison in Jackson Hole. The observation point rests along HWY 89, between the Moran junction and Moose Junction.

National Elk Refuge

Most of the Jackson bison herd winters at the National Elk Refuge. But they are harder to spot there during the winter.

Be safe when viewing

When viewing any wildlife in their natural habitat it is always best to keep a safe distance and do so with extreme caution. While it might seem harmless to approach without touching, disturbing the wildlife is dangerous for them and for you.

Keep a quiet demeanor if you are approached by wildlife and do not ever feed the wildlife to lure them closer or whatever the intention might be.

Bison are seemingly docile but should not be approached. When startled, they are most likely to charge and can cause injury or death.
